And the blissful one—Mashtots, I mean—hearing about his partner, was encompassed^{1cf. Luke 19:43, περικυκλόω} by grief^{2Jn 16:6, λύπη} of ardent longing,^{32 Cor 7:7, ἐπιπόθησις} tearful laments, and heavy mourning.^{4cf. Buzand, 3:11} For if the holy Apostle, not having immediately found his associate^{5cf. Acts 9;26, κολλάω} Timothy, expresses the discomfort of his soul,^{62 Tim 4:9-10} how much worse^{7Heb 10:29, χείρων} must be the suffering of those who remain on account of those who have taken their leave once and for all?^{8Heb 7:27, ἐφάπαξ} Yet, although the sorrow of solitude^{9cf. 2 Cor 7:10, James 4:9} does not permit one to become glad,^{10cf. Judges 16:25, ἀγαθύνω} by the grace of God he carried out the course of the [proclamation of the] good tidings and the oversight^{11cf. 1 Peter 5:2, ἐπισκοπέω} of the holy church without any shortcomings,^{12cf. 1 Thess 3:10, ὑστέρημα} and he strove to have^{13cf. 2 Pet 1:15, ἔχω} everyone [think on] whatever is virtuous and of good repute.^{14,Phil 4:815cf. Agath, 887} Day and night, with fasting, prayers, strong entreaties and exalted voice, he gave reminders of the ordinances of the divine commandments and warned everyone [to follow them], even training^{16cf. 1 Tim 4:7-8, γύμναζε} many in the most demanding ways of life.^{17cf. 1 Peter 2:12, ἀναστροφή} Especially in his old age, as he pondered the day of his death, he “gave no sleep to his eyes and no slumber to his eyelids”^{18cf.
